Every other mask substrate is a delivery vehicle. Spunlace, cotton, microfiber, lyocell, hydrogel, bio-cellulose, CNF — all of them hold the serum against skin and contribute nothing else. Chitosan is the exception: it is not a cellulose at all but a cationic amino-polysaccharide that forms a film and participates in the effect itself. That makes it the substrate brands choose when they want the cloth to be part of the story — and it also means the material deserves its own evidence, and its own honesty about what that evidence can and cannot support. Two suppliers, one word

This category contains two entirely different businesses using the same vocabulary. Base-fabric mills sell chitosan nonwoven by the roll — they cannot take a finished-goods brief. Finished-product OEM/ODM factories develop the serum, die-cut, impregnate and pack. And a third thing happens often enough to name: a converter with no real chitosan experience quotes a nonwoven with a chitosan finish rather than a chitosan substrate. Read the boundaries with the numbers

Three limits, and they matter more than the figures. One: these are in-vitro laboratory tests — not clinical trials on people. Two: they were run on the base fabric, not on a finished product, so they characterise the substrate and do not transfer automatically to any finished mask. Three: the testing was commissioned and non-CMA.

What that means practically: this data is genuinely useful for material selection and for a technical conversation with a buyer’s R&D team. It is not a basis for finished-product efficacy claims on pack. Anyone presenting substrate in-vitro data as proof that a finished mask treats acne is overreaching, and a retailer’s compliance team will say so.

The shellfish problem, and the grade that solves it

Classic chitosan is made from shrimp and crab shells. So it is not vegan, and it carries a crustacean origin — and crustaceans are a recognised allergen in the EU. For a European or vegan-positioned brand that is not a preference issue, it is a barrier.
