"Oil-control film" describes two very different products. One is a generic polypropylene sheet that wipes shine off. The other is an engineered micro-porous film that pulls sebum into its pore structure, turns clear where it works, and leaves water and makeup largely alone. They look identical in a photo and cost very differently to make — so the single most useful thing a brand can do when sourcing film is stop asking about price and start asking about the substrate.
Who makes oil-control film for private label, and what should I ask for? Ask every supplier to name the film substrate. Almost every film on the market falls into one of two classes, and the difference is the base film, not the printing or the case.

Both are legitimate products. What is not legitimate is a supplier selling the first while describing the second — which is common, because the words "micro-porous" and "3M" are used loosely across marketplace listings.
The specs to ask every film supplier for
These seven questions sort a converter that owns its substrate from one that buys mystery film by the roll:
- Name the substrate and its origin. Generic PP, or a named micro-porous film such as 3M? A supplier that can't name it is converting someone else's roll.
- Pore structure and thickness / basis weight. Ask for the actual figures, not adjectives.
- Oil absorption per area — and against what reference. Yanse states ~30% more oil per touch than a standard blotting sheet.
- Sebum vs water selectivity. A true micro-porous film should take up sebum without stripping water.
- Is the colour-change genuine? Some films are printed to look like they change; a real one turns transparent because oil fills the pores.
- In-house conversion? Coating, slitting, sheeting and packing under one roof means one accountable party for quality.
- Documents. ISO 22716 GMP, FSC where paper packaging is involved, plus market-access documentation for your target country.
