TREND RADAR — OIL BLOTTING PAPER

Oil blotting paper: the fibre sells, the case doesn't.

Blotting paper is one of the steadiest consumer categories in beauty: the core search cluster averages 14,800 US searches a month and hit a 12-month high of 18,100 in July–August 2026. On retail shelves the listings that win are plain natural-fibre papers, not compacts with mirrors. We have made this category since 2006 — 27 substrates, slit and packed in our own cleanroom. Stock samples in 72h, MOQ from 3,000.

WHY THIS, WHY NOW

A category that doesn't fade — it peaks every summer.

Blotting paper is not a trend that arrives and leaves. Demand bottoms out in winter and climbs every summer, and 2026's summer peak was the highest reading in twelve months. The narrower “oil blotting sheets” cluster more than doubled from its winter low. Meanwhile a viral liquid “oil sucker” format spiked to 2,900 searches in July and fell back near 1,000 — the sheet held its ground through the same months.

Winter trough, summer peak, every year — and the 2026 peak is the highest in the window. A repeat-purchase consumable with this curve is a planning calendar: brief in Q1, land stock before May.

The demand map, with the numbers.

Take this to your category meeting. Every figure is a pulled Google Ads volume, not an estimate — and every cluster is shown once, because Google counts close variants together.

* Google Ads search volume and suggested CPC retrieved via DataForSEO, United States / English, pulled 2026-09-24. Google groups close variants (e.g. “blotting paper” and “blotting sheets”) into one volume, so clusters are listed once and must not be added together.

WHAT SHOPPERS ACTUALLY SAY

Three objections that cost this category sales.

Heard in skincare communities and under blotting-paper review videos in 2026. None of them is about absorbency — which is exactly why a brief that only asks “how much does it absorb?” misses the point.

Recurring · skincare subreddits & review-video comments
“I loved them until I read they strip your skin — but I’m so oily I want to try again.”
What it means for your packThe demand did not go away — it was scared off. The objection traces to rubbing, not to blotting: pressing lifts sebum by capillary action, dragging turns the sheet into a dry wipe. Print press and lift, do not rub on the pack and choose a substrate with oil-over-water selectivity.
Recurring · comments under a widely watched blotting-paper ranking video
“Honestly a napkin does the same job.”
What it means for your positioningOn absorbency alone, you are competing with something free. The case for the category is no lint, makeup that survives the touch-up, a sheet that conforms so it never needs rubbing, and something that looks good coming out of a bag.
Recurring · review-video comments
“The puff stopped sticking, so I threw the whole thing out.”
What it means for compact formatsIn a mirror-and-puff compact, the accessory is the failure point — and when it fails, the paper goes in the bin with it. If you launch a compact, specify puff adhesion and a refill route. Or start with the paper.
Recurring · review-video comments
“Aren’t we supposed to be avoiding single-use products?”
What it means for your material storyThis one is answered with evidence, not adjectives: FSC-sourced fibre, plastic-free paper booklets, refills, and substrates such as coffee-infused linen made with recovered spent coffee grounds.

What the shelf says · Amazon category rank, Jun–Sep 2026
The best plain-fibre listing outranked the best mirrored compact by about 4×.

In monthly Keepa snapshots of Amazon’s Beauty & Personal Care category rank, the best-ranked plain bamboo-fibre blotting paper held roughly 1,400–2,500. The best-ranked compact with mirror and setting powder fell to 5,922 by September, and most mirrored listings sat between about 15,000 and 300,000. The listings that charge a premium did it on the fibre story — Japanese abaca, rice paper — not on accessories.

For a brief, that means: launch the paper first, spend the budget on the substrate, and add a compact or refill as the second SKU or gift edition.

* Category rank = Amazon Beauty & Personal Care BSR from the Keepa history API (lower is better), not keyword search position. A snapshot comparison, not a sales forecast. No brand is named.

BUYER FAQ

Questions buyers always ask

What basis weight (gsm) should oil blotting paper be?The working range is roughly 15 to 32 g/m². A 16 g/m² linen sheet is the industry reference and the most-ordered paper: light, soft and conforming. Suede-finish and bamboo-charcoal sheets run about 20 g/m². If the sheet carries setting powder, do not start below 16 g/m² for the base — a premium powder paper is a 16 g/m² base with a 2, 4 or 8 g/m² powder load, and the 8 g load (24 g/m² finished) suits most briefs. Heavier does not mean more absorbent; basis weight identifies and compares a substrate, it does not rank absorption.
Which blotting paper material is best for oily skin?It depends on the finish your shopper wants rather than on price. Linen and bamboo charcoal give the strongest, most matte lift and are the volume choice for oily and combination skin. Rice fibre and ultra-soft sheets are the gentler options. Setting-powder paper blots and re-mattifies in one step, so makeup survives the touch-up. Micro-porous film lifts fastest and shows the user it has worked. On retail shelves the listings that hold the best rankings are plain natural-fibre papers, and the ones that command a premium do it on the fibre story, not on accessories.
Do blotting sheets strip the skin, or remove sunscreen? The concern traces to how a sheet is used more than to the sheet itself. Blotting works by capillary action: pressing lifts surface sebum into the fibre, while dragging the sheet sideways turns it into a dry wipe, which is what disturbs makeup and moves sunscreen around. Print the instruction on the pack — press and lift, do not rub — and ask about oil-versus-water selectivity rather than raw absorbency, because an indiscriminate substrate is what produces the tight, over-cleaned feeling. Pressing lifts far less sunscreen than wiping does, but it is not zero, and a brand that claims zero will be caught.
Is a blotting sheet really better than a tissue or a napkin? For raw absorbency, a tissue does lift oil — which is why a brand positioned only on 'absorbs oil' is competing with something free. The difference is everything else: a tissue sheds lint, has no oil-versus-water selectivity and, because it does not conform to a curved face, the only way to use it is to wipe, which takes makeup with it. A blotting sheet is cut and finished to press and lift on contact. Build the claim on makeup survival, no lint and portability.
Should I launch a mirrored compact or a plain booklet?Launch the paper first. In Keepa category-rank snapshots from June to September 2026, the best-ranked plain bamboo-fibre listing held a Beauty & Personal Care rank of about 1,400–2,500, while the best-ranked compact with mirror and powder reached 5,922 by September and most mirrored listings sat between roughly 15,000 and 300,000. Compacts cost more to make and to buy, but they did not sell through faster. We still make compacts, tins and refills — as a second SKU or a gift edition, not as the hero.
What does private-label oil blotting paper cost, and what is the MOQ?As an indicative guide, ex-works and before freight and duties: US$0.15–0.30 per pack for a 50–100 sheet paper booklet, US$0.30–0.55 for a pop-up or flip-top case, and US$0.55–0.80 for a compact with mirror and puff. Fibre, basis weight, sheet count, print coverage, powder load and order size all move the number, so these are ranges, not quotations. MOQ starts at 3,000 units per SKU. Stock-style sample sets ship within 72 hours; custom samples take 1–3 weeks; mass production runs 25–35 days after sign-off.
What is coffee-infused linen? It is a linen sheet with spent coffee grounds worked into the fibre during sheet forming, so the particles sit inside the sheet rather than being coated on the surface. It is not a 'coffee fibre' paper — the fibre is linen and the coffee is a particulate carried within it. Because the grounds are a recovered by-product rather than a virgin input, it gives a brand a circular-sourcing story it can evidence rather than just assert, which matters more as green-claims rules tighten in the EU. Few mills run it.
Which certifications cover your blotting paper production?ISO 22716 (cosmetics GMP), US FDA Cosmetic GMP, GMPC, Sedex 4-Pillar, amfori BSCI, FSC for paper sourcing and Halal, plus SGS third-party testing. Yanse has passed supplier audits by L'Oréal, Watsons, MINISO and Mentholatum. Slitting, cutting and packing are done in-house in a Class-100,000 cleanroom, and we sign an NNN before any brief is shared.
