Most briefs that reach us say nothing about thickness. Then the first samples come back and the feedback is that the mask slides, or feels flimsy, or is not cool enough — all of which are the same variable, in different disguises.

There is the wet film — the depth of liquid gel laid onto the liner, typically 0.7–1.5 mm — and there is the finished gauge after the sheet has set. They are not the same number, and the relationship between them depends on the formulation's solids content.
Specify the finished gauge. That is what the customer touches, and it is the one a supplier can be held to at incoming inspection. Wet film is a process setting that belongs to the factory.
"Finished gauge X mm ± Y, measured at five points per sheet." Without the tolerance and the measurement method, a thickness number is decoration — two suppliers will hand you sheets that both technically comply and feel completely different.
What moves when you go thicker

Format changes the answer
Eye patches
Can afford to be at the thicker end. The area is small, the skin under the eye is close to horizontal when the user reclines, and the weight of the patch is trivial. Thickness here buys cooling and essence load at almost no adhesion penalty — which is why premium eye patches feel noticeably more substantial than face masks.
Full-face masks
The constraint flips. The sheet has to hang on cheeks and forehead against gravity, across a curved surface, while the user moves. This is where over-specifying thickness produces the classic complaint: the mask slides down the face after five minutes. Face masks generally sit at the thinner end of the useful range, and the cooling is bought back through water content rather than gauge.
Lip masks
Thinner again. The area is small, highly curved, and in constant motion. A thick lip mask lifts at the edges within minutes.
If you are launching eye, face and lip on one gel base, expect three different gauges from the same formulation. That is normal and correct — it is a die and process setting, not three separate developments. What should stay constant across the three is the gel system, so they behave and look like one family.
How thickness interacts with everything else
- Water content — a thick, very wet sheet is heavy and weak. If you push water up for cooling, thickness usually has to come down, or gel strength has to come up.
- Gel strength — a thin sheet needs a firmer gel to survive liner peel and handling. Thin plus soft is the combination that tears.
- Free essence in the pouch — a thick sheet already carries a large reservoir, so it needs less added liquid. Loading a thick sheet with a lot of free essence is the fastest route to a mask that slides.
- Cost — material scales roughly with gauge, and line speed falls as set time rises. A 40% thickness increase is not a 40% cost increase; it is usually more.

Ranges given here are typical working values for plant-based hydrogel systems and are intended as orientation for a brief, not as a formulation. The right numbers for your product depend on the gel system, the actives and the format, and are set during sampling.
